Crafts with the Kids
We like crafts around here, especially my 7yr old. Actually, I think it is the mess that crafts bring that he likes. If I would let him, he would have a pile of ‘in progress’ projects strewn all over of the house. It used to take over my kitchen table until I set up a card table and labeled it Craft Table, and stuck it in a corner. The mess stays contained! For the most part.
What makes crafts so great IS the mess right? Paper, crayons, glue, stickers, paint, glitter, beads, are all needed because the more ‘tools’ the better. I don’t mind because it allows him to get creative and more importantly it keeps him away from the tv and video games. He also likes to pick out his own craft supplies, as that is half the fun.
He knows that when we can buy something easy online, we do! That is why we were happy to be introduced to Factory Direct Craft and their amazing selection of craft supplies for kids. The website is super easy to navigate and love the Quick View feature so I don’t have to click into every page to get a closer look. You can find any supply imaginable and believe me O’Bear will spend a long time browsing and deciding on his next craft idea!
Do you have any craft projects you’ve completed lately that O’Bear would enjoy?
Our Easy Upcycled Cape & Watching Captain America
It’s been a superhero night at our house! We watched Captain America and made a cape!
If you know your super heroes then you would have already said to yourself, but Captain America doesn’t wear a cape. Well, that’s ok. We had fun and what little boy doesn’t need a cape?
Especially an Upcycled T-Shirt Cape. No Sew. You need a pair of scissors and a large t-shirt. EASY!
Cut Off Sleeves
Cut up the sides to separate the front and back. Cut around the neck.
Make the shape of cape you want. Cut the length if you need to make it shorter.
Cut the neck apart and tie into a knot so the child can easily slip over their head
(another way is to attach a piece of velcro to connect)
Ta-Da!
We rent Captain America from the Blockbuster Express Kiosk (visit them on Facebook & Twitter!)
It was super fast and easy!
Captain America: First Avenger is a Hot Movie that comes with our In-Stock Guarantee. If Captain America: First Avenger is out of stock, text HERO to 39777 and we’ll text you a promo code for a $1 discount off your next movie rental.
You can visit our photo tour on purchasing the movie, shopping for snacks, and making our cape.
O’Bear is Captain America obsessed right now so I can’t tell how excited he was to watch the movie. He and his brother had seen it in the theater with their grandpa, but he couldn’t wait to share it with Hubby and me.
A bit about the movie: Steve Rogers was a scrawny boy who wanted to fight in the war like everyone else and do his part. He finally got accepted in as a scientific experiment which buffed him up and gave him super human strength.
He quickly became an American Hero!
His best friend was thought to be dead and Rogers forces his way into enemy territory to free him and hundreds of others. This is just the beginning as bad guy, The Red Skull, is trying to build his own army for world domination.
Lots of action as Captain America fights with his bullet-proof, bommerang, shield (now I know why O’Bear HAD to have a shield) and not only wins the war, but saves them all.
A happy ending? You’ll have to watch!
My boys definitely get into character when watching their favorite movies!

Our Pirate Ship Project for #GlueNGlitter #XTREMESchoolGlue
Another fun project for me and the boys! I got sent an Elmer’s X-TREME Glue Stick to make a summer craft. Guess what we choose? A pirate ship what else?!
We picked up our pirate ship kit at Target. It’s made of foam boards and the instructions say to use a hot glue gun to put it together, but I had an extra strength formulated glue stick so it would be all I need. Can you imagine little kids using glue guns?
We came home and laid out all of our pieces. I was a little nervous when I saw them all and hoped it would be easier than it looked!
O’Bear got busy right away, taking the bigger interlocking parts and gluing them together. First the base where the ship will sit. Then the sides and the deck floor.
This part was a little tricky. Trying to get everything in place without another section falling down. Of course, if I would have been more patient and waited for the glue to dry on each part then maybe it would have been a little easier
The structure of our ship is complete!
Now comes the fun part of adding sails, rope ladders, skulls on flags, all of which we needed our new handy dandy glue stick for!
Why is the X-TREME glue stick nice? Not only can it be used on a a variety of surfaces, like paper, photos, wood, craft sticks, fabric, ribbon, buttons, gems, craft materials, foam sheets, foam board, poster board, cardboard, and more, but it is non-toxic and can easily wash off hands and clothes. Our hands did get a little sticky but it came off nicely!
After the entire ship is in place we add the final touches ~ water, windows, and our favorite prop ~ the cannon!
O’Bear was so proud of his ship! With a little bit of accessorizing we are ready for play!
