Making Reading More Adventurous
Summer break is officially over at our house. Back to school this week. We’ve been busy shopping for new supplies, organizing desk space and talking about lunch and snack options. I want everything to go smoothly this year and this includes ideas on making reading more adventurous. Let me tell you why.
On my 7th grader’s school list it says to bring reading material. For most of us in the family this is easy peasy because we always have a book in our hand. For him, not so much. It is a chore for me to have him pick out something and I guess torture for him because he has to sit and read it. I’ve come up with some ways to make reading a little more adventurous for him and XFINITY is here to help.
Making Reading More Adventurous
Research the books. When I give O’Bear a project to look up online, he is happy. He likes researching and finding answers. Using XFINITY fast internet, he can find book recommendations for his age group and favorite genre. He can even research the topic or author first to see if he finds it interesting. We love GoodReads at our house to help keep track of what we’ve read and are able to rate our books when we are done.
yep this is how he uses his computer.
I will read it too. He really likes when I read the book at the same time. Then we can discuss what is going on and if we like it overall at the end.
Crafts. I wrote a great post on 10 Preschool Story and Craft Ideas where the projects line up. You can do this same thing with any book I think! O’Bear is a creative kid and is still happy when I get out the scissors, glue and markers.
Theme Dinners. Did you just finish reading Harry Potter? Make some Pretzel Wands and Homemade ButterBeer to go along with dinner. Dressing up as your favorite character will make it more fun!
movie night always has popcorn!
Movie Night. This is our favorite – when the books are movies too! On Comcast’s XFINITY TV you can search from thousands of movies to watch. Many times you will be surprised that the book you are reading is a movie! If a book doesn’t have movie made, you can almost always find something that matches pretty well. Right now we are reading BFG and can’t wait to see it in movie form. We can then can read and watch another Roald Dahl book because they are all great!
XFINITY X1 has voice remote commands, DVR to store hundreds of shows and even an App to watch anywhere you go on any device. It sounds right up my family’s alley!
