Let There Be Light is pictured above. The illusatrations are outstanding and the words are beautiful. This retelling of the biblical story of creation vividly portrays the wonder and beauty of God’s creation on each of the seven days.

“On the third day God said, ‘Let the waters gather together into oceans and let the dry land appear’

Author Archbishop Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his lifelong struggle to bring equality, justice, and peace to his native country of South Africa. Awesome.

Books for ages 8-14

Dead Low Tide is the third book in the Caden Chronicles. Remember my post last week on Books to Read Out Loud with your Family? I told you that we started number one – Dead Man’s Hand. My big boys are loving it so far. Each chapter leaves us hanging and excited for the next night.

On vacation with his parents in Savannah, Georgia, Nick Caden is eager to investigate the mystery surrounding Heidi May Laveau, a girl who supposedly died years ago but whose body just washed up on the shore. (And only days before Savannah’s huge Zombie Crawl.) Once more, Nick’s curiosity gets the better of him, only this time he brings his sister, Wendy, along to investigate—and she’s taken by what appears to be a zombie of the dead girl!

Enchanted Attic: Wrestling with Tom Sawyer is the fourth book in The Enchanted Attic series. I am excited to start this series next with my boys. The other titles include Moby Dick, the Hunchback and the Three Musketeers.

The gang agrees that Tom Sawyer should be brought into the Real World. He’d be a refreshing change after Captain Ahab and Lady D’ Winter—much easier to handle. However, upon arrival, Tom immediately picks a fight with Walter, falls in love with Ophelia, and continuously attempts to one-up Linus. When Ophelia is kidnapped, Tom is determined to save her, just like he did with Becky Thatcher.

The Ether: Vero Rising – Soon after his twelfth birthday, Vero learns he is a guardian angel and is abruptly transported to the Ether, the spiritual realm that surrounds the earth.

My almost 12-year old loved this story and read it super fast because he couldn’t put it down. This book doesn’t actually come out until February 4th, but he is ready for the next one!

Yet before he can be counted among these fierce warriors, Vero must learn to master his growing powers, competing with other angels-in- training and battling demonic creatures known as maltures as well as mythical creatures such as the leviathan. Until his instruction is complete, Vero needs to alternate between the Ether and his regular life.

Gods at War Student Edition.

Kyle Idleman, bestselling author of Not a Fan (on my Wish List!), helps us recognize there are false gods at war within each of us, and they battle for the place of glory and control in our lives. What keeps us from truly following Jesus Christ is that our hearts are pursuing something or someone else like money or popularity. While these pursuits may not be the ‘graven images’ of old, they are in fact modern day idols. Behind the sin you’re struggling with, the fear you’re dealing with, the lack of purpose you’re living with is a false god that is winning the war for your heart.

It is a good one for youth group reads!
