Tips to Fit In the New Neighborhood Fast

It’s hard being the new family in town. What kids are in neighborhood to play with? Where are the local spots the adults like to hang out? How do I find a sitter I can trust to stay with my kids? These are all questions I’ve asked myself in my moves over the years. Let me share with you some tips to fit in the new neighborhood fast.

Some questions you might ask yourself when you move to a new area:

What age kids are in the neighborhood?

Our best idea yet is bringing out our bounce house to the front yard. The kids flock over! It could be the fancy sprinkler or motorized vehicle. Something all the children want to play with. Be sure to take advantage of the parents when they stop by to see what all the excitement is – ask your questions you’ve been dying to!

My big boys are also known to start playing ball in the middle of the street. See who wants to join in the game.

Where are the adult hangouts? Best eateries and pubs?

Google is of course great with their reviews, but I’ve been known to slide on over my bench at swim lessons to the nearest parent and say ‘hey I’m new here can I ask you a couple of questions.’

Teachers are a great wealth of information and ones you usually have instant access to.

Ask the locals as you wander. Boulder has a fabulous downtown and if you stop anyone and ask them the best place to grab a craft beer, you’ll definitely get your ear talked off.

Sitter App - Tips to Fit in the New Neighborhood Fast!

How do I find a sitter when I know no one?

This question is a great one. You might know everyone…except that teenager down the block because your kids are young. I have an answer!

It’s called the Sitter App and it may become your new favorite app on your phone!

Find a sitter in your area: Search by the criteria you are looking for and choose a mile radius you’d like them to be in.

Check out profiles: Each sitter has an About Me page, plus the price they charge. You can introduce yourself and have a little chat first.

Book instantly: You can communicate with all your sitters at once. The first one to respond gets the job. You can then pay through the app too!

See who your friends use: Connect with friends on the app and you can see their favorite sitters are.

Trust: This is the hard one and one you’ll get more comfortable as you use the app. Sitter is the leading free app for parents and babysitters nationwide if that makes you feel better. And remember to get your friends on board – find new sitters together!

Fast! Who knew it could all be so simple? No more picking up the phone and calling everyone you know, which in my case would not be many. ha!

  • I actually downloaded the app and then found that they haven't launched in my area yet. So I was out of luck.
  • I don't need the app for myself, but now that I know about it, I know some folks who would love this!
  • I no longer have children under 18, but the app seems as if it would be useful for a family.
  • The Sitter app has not launched in my area. But I have a friend that can use this awesome app!
  • Yes, there are sitters in my area. I will most likely not be using this app. I prefer to watch my own children.
  • The Sitter App wouldn't benefit me, but it would help out my brother! I'm going to share this information with him!
  • Oops I think I copied the wrong tweet link! It should be: https://twitter.com/Dolphin4176/status/731320679824429064
  • We don't leave dd with a sitter! That's what family is for and we luckily live around enough that we can usually find someone to watch her...usually it's my mom! :-)
  • We don't need sitters at the moment, but this would be great to pass along to my friends and family.
  • I couldn't use this, but I can see where it would help some. It' hard when you are new to an area, but it's hard letting just anyone watch your children.
  • I checked out the app and it seems like the real deal, like that you can see families in your area. I personally do not have use for this app since my children are grown, but with there was this kind of technology when I had small kids!
    • Hi Holly, it's Dan from the Sitter App here. I couldn't actually find a record of you as a user in the app. But, thanks for being an early adopter and trying out the Sitter App! We've just launched the find sitters in your neighborhood feature (previously the app was completely a private network) so it may be a few weeks until you start seeing sitters show up on the app in your neighborhood. We are adding sitters by the hundreds each week. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me [email protected]
  • I'm the grandma, so I am the sitter. But I did share the app with my son to check out in case there are times that I'm not available.

  • The app would be wonderful for my son. Unfortunately, we were not able to find sitters in my area.
    • Hi Debbi, it's Dan from the Sitter App here. I couldn't actually find a record of you as a user in the app- perhaps you registered with a different name than what shows in your comment? But, thanks for being an early adopter and trying out the Sitter App! • Would have been a great tool for me years ago, but unfortunately I am not in need of a sitter (maybe for our pets) I am sure it would be great for those with youngsters, as the app looks great!
  • I didn't find sitters in my neighborhood since I'm in a very rural place, I didn't expect to.
  • I just wish you were able to head to a website and take a look instead of having to download. Basically to see if it is worth taking up memory!
  • I definitely could use this app since I don't have much family in the area to babysit. Some friends help out but it's always nice to have back-up. I found a sitter within 2 miles from me!
  • the closest one to me is the nearest (big)city, which is 65 miles away but actually I wouldn't need a babysitter but rather, a pet sitter lol Kathryn C
  • I downloaded the app and there are plenty of sitters nearby, this is an amazing app being able to get paid, connect, the timer feature for parents is GREAT.
