A new puppy is work. Work, work, work. Duke is now two years old and he is still work! I will admit though that my Hubby has done a fantastic job in training him and he really is well mannered. What is his secret? Rewards! A dog can not resist affection and yummy treats for a being a good listener.

We keep treats in our pockets or backpacks where we can easily grab. When do we reward our dog? Let me tell you.

When to Reward Your Dog

Taking him out to the open trails off leash is great practice. He gets rewarded when:

Walking side by side with us, not letting him get ahead.

Come when we call. The real test is when a rabbit or squirrel gets in his sight!

Sit and stay. When we see a family coming towards us on the path with their dog, we pull over and let them pass.

We also like to practice at home because the sidewalks are narrower and there is usually many distractions with kids and pets. Can he resist the neighbor dog walking in front of our house? Yes he can! Especially when he knows he’ll get rewarded.

One more area we reward in has to do with his kennel. Duke is crate trained and goes in there when we are not home (or he’ll tear up the house!). When we say ‘cage’ and he walks in on this own, then a treat is waiting.

What treats do we use? Right now we have Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Deli Cuts and Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Meatloaf Morsels – boy do these look like like the real thing and that is because they are! Made with real U.S. farm-raised beef or chicken. No artificial flavors, corn, wheat or meat by-products. The meat is always the #1 ingredient which I love!

We found ours at Chewy.com –

One thing that is always important that we work on is taking the treats nicely. We want to teach him to be friendly with everyone, even the little kids. If he tries to take it fast with this teeth, then he doesn’t get it. Slow with the lips is the key.

Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Treats are intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Please watch your dog to ensure Nutrish treats are thoroughly chewed before swallowing. Break into small pieces for smaller dogs.
