Why I Choose Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste For My Family
This shop, Tom’s of Maine toothpaste, has been compensated. All opinions are mine alone.
I think I’ve told you this story before, but let me share again. Our journey to becoming more natural began about 10 years ago. My oldest boys were very little and my husband started chiropractic school. We began to make very crunchy friends who really opened our eyes!
One of my first steps was trying to find toothpaste with no fluoride. My area had one small natural foods store that was in a part of town I didn’t go to often and online shopping wasn’t my thing yet. Lucky for me, Walmart carried Tom’s of Maine toothpaste.

The first reason I choose Tom’s of Maine for my family is that you can find it in everyday stores like Walmart and it is affordable!
Let me also say – it is available on Amazon too. This is huge for me these days because I order from them weekly.
Earlier this month I was a lucky girl and was able to visit Tom’s of Maine in Kennebunkport, Maine. Here I learned a little of their story on how they began. Tom and Kate Chappell (I drove by their house just blocks from their office!) couldn’t find natural personal care items for their family so in 1970 created their own.
Here is the very first mixer they used to come up with the right formula. Five years later their first toothpaste was on the shelves.
The second reason I choose Tom’s of Maine toothpaste for my family is their products do not contain artificial colors, flavors, fragrances, preservatives, animal ingredients or animal testing.
And ALL their toothpaste is made right in Maine in a zero waste factory with only 62 employees! Even the toothpaste tubes that are cut and sealed on the line leave 2inch end strips that would normally be thrown away, but instead are upcycled to make new ones.
For this post I’m showing off Tom’s of Maine® Silly Strawberry® Anticavity Toothpaste made with real fruit juice. It is the only toothpaste that two of my boys will use! I love love that you can grab it fluoride free because we do not want that additive in little tummies and these are the learning years on spitting out and not swallowing.
I’m also sharing Tom’s of Maine® Simply White® Clean Mint Cavity Protection Toothpaste which happens to contain the fluoride and not one I would normally buy because of that. I do understand why people want to use it topically I just won’t. This toothpaste uses naturally sourced silicas without bleaching chemicals.
The third reason I choose Tom’s of Maine for my family is because they go the extra mile to be green and make our earth a better place.
I bet you didn’t know they give their employees money towards a hybrid car or that their factory uses wind credits to offset energy usage or how they are teamed up with Terracycle to recycle and reuse everything they can.
In fact, just last year they changed their toothpaste packaging to aluminum barrier laminate (ABL) tubes which requires lower consumption of energy, fossil fuels, and water to manufacture plus they weigh less so can be manufactured more efficiently, reducing packaging waste.
Right on the Walmart shelf I found this info (loved that! see pic above), but you will find this chart on your toothpaste box and I urge you to check out their website too! They really are forthcoming with ingredients (well everything really!) and want to hear how they can do better always.
I love it for my family and I hope you’ll check it for yours.
Updated to add – They have a toothpaste now called Botanically Fresh that is fluoride free and sls-free. I chat about it in my post link here because it is my new fav!
Also check out why I switched to their Long Lasting Natural Deodorant.
