Mom Corps YOU Teaches Saving for the Future

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Mom Corps YOU. I received a free trial to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Last month I chatted with you about Mom Corps. A national award-winning professional talent acquisition and career development firm that has launched Mom Corps YOU, an online community to help professionals better integrate their professional and personal lives. I’m happy to be teamed up with them for three more months to share with you what they are all about!

One area they help in are finances. Managing your finances and saving for the future can cause stress and uncertainty and one of the great features of Mom Corps are Live Webinars. Last week a one hour session was hosted by Jean Chatzky titled ‘Become a Savvy Saver’. This is always one area in my life I could be reminded about often. Makes me rethink and reorganize the money flow in our household. I think I know it all, but then I listen and continue to learn!

Some tips she covered that I enjoyed…

Automate your Savings – if you won’t see it you won’t spend it. Have a set amount come out every month from your checking account to savings. Put your money in an account like a 401K. IRA, CD or College Account where you can’t touch it.

Use a Retirement Calculator to see how much you should save. Plug in numbers like rent, income, and whatever it asks to see the recommended savings amount. Figure out what works for your family. She recommends starting slowly if you don’t have  a savings right now…even 2% which is not a lot, but you shouldn’t miss from your budget. Work your way up as time allows for raises, etc.

Save with Food  by Meal Planning and Couponing. When shopping remember that 50% off doesn’t mean you have to buy it because you are still spending another 50% to purchase. Make sense? Make sure you need it!  I know I love to buy things if they are on sale and tell myself it’s okay. Also she says to go shopping by yourself. Kids always want things!

Use Websites and Apps like GasBuddy.com find cheapest price of gas in your area. ShopSavvy app lets you compare items by scanning barcodes to find the best deal.

Great tips huh?!

The Webinars are FREE with your membership and best of all if you can’t attend you can listen to the recording later like I did. I opened a window in my browers and listened to her teach while I was multi-tasking. There is no better way!

Or you may just want to read some of Chatzky’s advice articles found in the Resource section. They range from how to cut fixed expenses, hire a financial adviser, and choose a credit card.

Could you always use Finance advise too?

  • Those are great tips! Especially re-thinking whether I really need something just because it's on sale. :) I have passed on items I know I won't use, but once in a while I buy something that I can't or won't use. Luckily, one of my 4 grown kids will usually take it tho. Automated savings is awesome! It's surprising how much money we don't need in our pocket every paycheck. I have automatic deductions set up through work and my bank. Start mall and work up to a sizeable amount. easy peasy!
